Natural stonework

New stonework built in solid or faced construction, from garden and boundary walls to feature elevations and bespoke dressed detail. Work is set out from the stone itself, so coursing, joints and finishes read as one piece rather than a cladding exercise.

When you might need it

  • You are adding stonework to a property and want it to match, not approximate, the existing masonry.
  • A design calls for stone detail that a general builder would substitute with a manufactured product.
  • An existing wall has reached the end of its life and is better rebuilt than patched.

How the work runs

    Assessment

    Site visit to look at the existing masonry, ground conditions and setting out.

  2. 02

    Stone selection

    Choosing a stone for character, weathering behaviour and compatibility with what is already there.

  3. 03

    Preparation

    Foundations, drainage and any structural provision agreed before stone arrives.

  4. 04

    Building

    Coursing, bedding and jointing worked by hand, checked as the wall rises.

  5. 05

    Finishing

    Pointing, copes and a clean-down, with the site left tidy.

Materials

Scottish sandstone, granite and whinstone are common choices, alongside reclaimed stone where a match to existing work matters. Mortar is specified to suit the stone rather than the other way round.

Common questions

Can you match the stone on my existing building?
Usually a close match is possible, either from the same geological source or from reclaimed stone. An exact match cannot be promised before we have seen the masonry.
Do I need planning permission?
It depends on height, location and whether the building is listed or in a conservation area. We can tell you what is likely, but your local authority confirms it.
How long does stonework take?
Hand-built masonry is planned around careful coordination. The programme depends on scale, access and weather, and is set out in writing before work starts.
